This Saturday, the Feast of St. Mark, is also the day of the Major Rogation,* a day of prayer beseeching God for the blessings of nature's bounty and for protection from calamities. The word rogation comes from the Latin rogare, which means to ask.
Rogation Days are generally observed with processions and the Litany of the Saints. Though we cannot gather this year in procession, Fr. Vidal will be offering the Litany, with an emphasis on deliverance from pestilence, this Saturday, April 25th, at 2pm. It will be livestreamed on our Facebook page, For those wishing to pray along, the text of Saturday's Great Litany may be found here.
*There are two sets of Rogation Days. The first, called the “Major” or “Greater” Litanies, is celebrated on April 25th. The second, called the “Minor” or “Lesser” Litanies, is celebrated on the three days immediately before Ascension Thursday and is preceded by Rogation Sunday [the Sixth Sunday of Easter].
